Access to Higher Education

This course provides an alternative to A Levels and GCSEs for entry into university and is designed for students who are returning to learning after a break in their education.

The majority of students on the programme tend to be in their 20s and 30s.

According to your circumstances the course can be completed over one year or two years.

If you are unsure about taking the plunge and enrolling on the course, you might like to try a Pre-Access taster session.  Find out more.

What will I study?
It consists of three core elements:

  • English and Study Skills
  • Maths
  • Information Technology

Plus specialist options:

  • Sociology
  • Sciences
  • Psychology
  • Education Studies

What do I need?
You do not need any formal entrance qualifications but all applicants are interviewed, assessed and given advice and guidance on whether the course is suitable for them.

If you do have existing qualifications, eg GCSE English or Maths, you may be exempt from some elements of the course.

What qualification will I get?
Access to Higher Education Diploma

How will I be assessed?
Assessment on the course is conducted by the college and moderated externally by Open College Network West Midlands.

Each successfully completed assessment earns 3 credits and to be awarded the overall Access to Higher Education Diploma a student must achieve a minimum of 60 credits.

What can I do then?
Successful Access to HE students have a qualification that is recognised by universities for entry to degree level courses.

In recent years our students have progressed to study degree courses such as teaching, nursing, midwifery, social work, psychology, sociology and science.

We have close links with universities in this area such as Wolverhampton University, Birmingham University, Birmingham City University, Aston University, Newman University College, Coventry University, Worcester University and Staffordshire University.

However, the qualification is nationally recognised and some of our students have gone to universities further afield.

Applying
Please complete the application form and return it to the address shown.

If you are aged between 19 and 25 and do not possess a full level 3 qualification (equivalent to two A levels, a National Award, Certificate or Diploma, an Access to HE or NVQ 3) then you are entitled to your first full level 3 qualification free of charge (a small booking fee may apply).
