This course is for people who do not have English as their first language.

Why study this course?

GCSE mathematics Grade 4 or 5 is required for most forms of employment and for progression onto Level 3 academic and vocational courses. This qualification will provide the mathematical skills necessary to meet the national minimum standard or numeracy required for employment and progression into further education.

Course content

The course will follow the Pearson (Edexcel) specification for GCSE Mathematics at Foundation level and will be taught across 2 sessions per week. Learners must be able to attend both sessions weekly. The course will be assessed via 3 written examinations in May and June 2024.

The course will develop learners’ understanding and skills in the following areas of mathematics:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Ratio and Proportion
  • Geometry and Measures
  • Probability
  • Statistics

Learners will need to complete at least 3 hours of independent study per week to support the content covered in lesson.

Entry requirements

Learners must hold a full certificate in ESOL or other English language qualification at Entry 3 as a minimum due to the language requirements of the course. Learners will complete a short initial assessment to determine their eligibility.

Learners should have completed Functional skills mathematics to at least Entry 3, however your current mathematical knowledge will be assessed by a short assessment to determine your eligibility to study this course.

Materials

You will need a pen, an A4 sized lined notepad and a folder to keep your work in.

Day, time, duration

Monday 9.00-11.00 and Friday 10.00-12.10

Learners will need to attend both sessions.
