This course is for people who do not have English as their first language.

This course offers progression for learners who have successfully completed Entry 2 or are already working at a higher level.

Course content

The course consists of three separate awards that are combined into an overall certificate. Each award is assessed separately and can form a qualification in their own right if learners do not pass all three components. The course is examined by Trinity College London.

Speaking and Listening:

  • Obtain information and relevant supporting details; use clear pronunciation to convey meaning; use appropriate language in context; present verbal information in an appropriate structure; provide a verbal account of given information; contribute to discussions; express views constructively; plan actions with other to complete a given task; obtain relevant information from others.

Reading:

  • Identify the main points and events in a text; use language features to identify meaning; identify the meaning of words and phrases; identify the purpose of a short text; obtain information from a short text;

Writing:

  • Present information in an appropriate format; construct sentences correctly; use adjectives and punctuation correctly; spell correctly; complete personal details in a form accurately; use the alphabet to order words based on their first and second letters.

Entry requirements

No formal entry requirements. Learners will take an initial assessment in Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing to assess their suitability for the Skills for Life courses and the most appropriate level of study.

Materials

You will need a pen, an A4 sized lined notepad and a folder to keep your work in.
