Why study this course?
Learners achieving Grade 4 or 5 at the end of this course will have met the minimum standard of literacy required for most forms of employment and higher education courses. The course is an opportunity to complete the GCSE English Language course at a fast pace and in an online capacity.
Course content
The course will follow the AQA specification for GCSE English. The course will be assessed via a single examination in Summer 2023. This comprises two papers – Paper 1: Explorations in creative reading and writing (fiction), and Paper 2: Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives (non-fiction). There is also a separate speaking and listening endorsement, where you will be required to present on a topic of your choice. This is marked as pass, merit or distinction and does not contribute to the overall GCSE grade awarded at the end of the course.
All examinations will require travel to our Whittingham Road campus.
Entry requirements
You must hold a GCSE English qualification at Grade D/3, or a Functional Skills English qualification at Level 1, and be able to show proof of this.

The course will be taught via one session per week. This session will be taught online via Microsoft Teams which means you must have access to an appropriate electronic device e.g. laptop, desktop or tablet with access to a microphone and webcam, a strong internet connection, and the Microsoft Teams app. Writing materials and an exercise book/folder will also be needed.
