Why study this course?

The VTCT Level 2 Certificates in Colouring and Cutting Hair are qualifications that have been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in the creative art of colouring and cutting women’s hair and how to provide an effective consultation service for clients and work within Health and Safety guidelines.
The purpose of this qualification is to develop your practical skills to a high level of occupational ability to enable you to perform your own salon services.

Course content

Units studied:
  • UV20386 – Client consultation for hair services
  • UV20483 – Follow health and safety practice in the salon
  • UV20486 – Colour and lighten hair – services include semi-permanent, Quasi-permanent, permanent and lightening. You will analyse factors that impact on colouring services i.e. temperature, existing colours, test results, hair porosity, density, length and tone etc. You will consider contra-indications and restrictions to services i.e. Hair damage, allergies, incompatible products etc.
  • UV20485 – Cut women’s hair – services include one length, uniform layer, short and long graduation and to cut a fringe. You will learn cutting techniques of club cutting, free hand and scissor over comb.
You will learn to analyse the density , texture, growth patterns, elasticity of hair and also analyse head and face shapes.
Each of the above units requires students to build a portfolio of evidence, carry out practical assessments of skills and complete an external written exam.

Entry requirements

This course is designed as a roll on course from the art of dressing hair, which runs from Sept-Oct. If this has not been completed candidates must have prerequisite qualification as a minimum in styling, shampooing and conditioning hair or have previous hairdressing experience.
If candidates have previously studied introduction courses, these do not give credits towards this course. If candidates have already achieved one subject of the course previously (i.e. Colouring) they must show evidence of this by showing Certification.
Student must have a good level of Literacy and Numeracy skills, a successful interview and trade test.
Candidates may be required to complete an infection prevention qualification subject to guidance at the time of enrolment. If this is required this will be delivered at the beginning of the qualification and requires theory knowledge and completion of an external written exam.


A hairdressing tunic and trousers are required for uniform
There is a small colouring hair kit, and a cutting kit to be purchased to enrol on this qualification.
