Why study this course?
Many adults looking to progress, academically or professionally, are now required to have a Level 2 qualification in mathematics, and Functional Skills are widely recognised by employers and institutions as a suitable alternative to the GCSE. In fact, employers were involved in the design of the reformed Functional Skills in order to address gaps in skills and knowledge needed for the workplace.
We provide a course that is flexible and suits the demands of adult learners seeking to improve their mathematics skills: for their own personal development, for employment reasons or to progress into further/higher education.
Please note, this course is delivered via Microsoft Teams, which means you must have access to an appropriate electronic device e.g. laptop, desktop or tablet with access to a microphone and webcam, a strong internet connection, and the Microsoft Teams app. Writing materials and an exercise book/folder will also be needed.
Course content
The course will follow the Pearson (Edexcel) specification for Functional Skills Mathematics at Level 2 and will be taught via one session per week.
You will be required to complete regular assessments in order for us to track your progress.
The course will run for 12 weeks and will be examined at the end of this block via a single examination. This comprises two papers – Section A which is a non-calculator assessment; and Section B in which calculator use is allowed.
Examinations will take place at our Whittingham Road campus during week commencing 26th June.
A Level 2 qualification in mathematics will provide opportunity to study most level 3 programmes.
Functional Skills qualifications are recognised by most employers as a relevant mathematics qualification.
