This course is for people who do not have English as their first language.
Why study this course?
Functional skills is widely recognised by employers and other educational institutions. Level 1 offers progression to Level 2 or GCSE, both of which meet the national minimum standard of numeracy required for employment.
The course will follow the Pearson (Edexcel) specification for Functional Skills at Level 1 and will be taught across 2 sessions per week. Learners are expected to attend both sessions on a weekly basis. The course will be assessed via written examinations in December, March or June. There is also an internally assessed speaking and listening assessment where learners will complete a presentation and a group discussion.
Learners will need to complete at least 2 hours of independent study per week to support the content covered in lesson.
Learners must hold a full certificate in ESOL or other English language qualification at Entry 3 as a minimum due to the language requirements of the course. Learners will complete a short initial assessment to determine their eligibility.
