The Level 5 Diploma in Education & Training is informed by research and current developments in the discipline and by feedback from students, external examiners and employers.  Modules do therefore change periodically in the interests of keeping the course relevant and reflecting best practice.  The most up to date information will be available to you once you have accepted a place and registered for your course.  If there are insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, this may not be offered, but we will advise you as soon as possible and help you choose an alternative.

Students attend College one evening per week, with tutorials once a week to monitor progress.  Online resources support the course content, available at The Hive, and the College’s online learning platform.

The course provides opportunities to test understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or ‘formative’ assignments.  Formative assessment tasks will generate evidence that can be used for summative portfolios.  Each module has one or more formal or ‘summative’ assessments, which are graded and count towards the overall module grade.

Each module is assessed by written assignment of approximately 3500 words each.  Trainee teachers are also required to teach 30 hours in Year 1 and 70 hours in Year 2 along with four lesson observations each academic year.

Students receive feedback on practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework.  Feedback on examination performance is available upon request from the Course Leader.  Feedback is intended to support learning, and students are encouraged to discuss it with personal academic tutors and module tutors as appropriate.

We aim to provide students with feedback on formal course work assessments within 20 working days of hand-in.

Level 3 qualification in the area the student wishes to teach:
Eligible qualifications include: HND/HNC; CGLI Advanced Craft Certificate; OCR Advanced Qualifications; NVQ/SVQ Level 3; A levels (GCE/VCE/Applied subjects); Edexcel/BTEC; Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers; Irish Leaving Certificate (Higher); QAA-recognised Access courses; European or International Baccalaureates; technical, commercial or other appropriate professional qualification.

Level 2 English and mathematics:
Eligible qualifications include: GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or equivalent at Level 2, for example Functional Skills.

Other information:
All students (voluntary or paid) are required to complete a minimum of 100 hours teaching during the DET course. This is split into a minimum of 30 hours in the first year, and a minimum of 70 hours in the second year. A placement must be confirmed within 5 weeks of the Course Induction in September with the course leader. If students fail to provide such information, they will not be able to continue on the course.

Students will be supported by a Subject Specialist mentor who will provide guidance and support in the curriculum area and observe the student four times during the two years of the course (twice at Level 4 in the first year, and twice at Level 5 in the second year).
