Engineering - HNC - Part time

BTEC HNC in Engineering (3 pathways available) 120 credits

Length of Course: 2 Years

This course comprises eight modules of study – all at level 4 and all carrying 15 credits. There are four compulsory plus four optional. The choice of optional modules will determine the title of the final HNC qualification.

Compulsory Modules:

All pathways contain the following compulsory modules:

  • Engineering Design15 credits
  • Engineering Mathematics 15 credits
  • Engineering Science 15 credits
  • Managing a Professional Engineering Project15 credits

Optional Modules:

For the Electrical and Electronic Engineering pathway, there is an additional compulsory module:

  • Electrical and Electronic Principles15 credits

Plus 3 optional modules *

For the Mechanical Engineering pathway, there are two additional compulsory modules:

  • Mechanical Principles15 credits
  • Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines 15 credits
  • Plus 2 optional modules *

    For the General Engineering pathway, four optional modules may be chosen *

    There are currently 25 optional modules published covering a wide range of engineering specialisms. Options chosen reflect student interests and work roles.*

    How will I be assessed?

    You will engage in a range of learning and assessment activities and be encouraged to become effective and independent in researching and presenting work.

    Assessment is through practical and theoretical assignment activities, where there are between two and four assignments set per module of study.

    All assignment work is both assessed and quality assured within College, as well as being subject to quality assurance sampling by the Awarding Body.

    What do I need?

    English and Maths GCSE grades C/4 or above

    A related Level 3 qualification.

    Mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include extensive work experience and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in their work sector.

    Part Time course 2 Years

    • Students attend College one day per week during term time and participate in a range of activities including lectures, workshops, practical activities, tutorials and presentations.
    • Students allocated a Personal Tutor to support them in the transition to studying on a higher education programme, and also to give advice and guidance.
    • Students are encouraged to use a wide range of resources, including books and on line journals from the Learning Resource Centre on Campus, as well as on line learning materials.

    Applicants who have been out of education for several years and/or have not studied Maths above GCSE level should seek advice via Admissions regarding a bridging Maths course.
