Further Mathematics A Level

This course is designed for students wishing to study Mathematics at university, or to study Science or Engineering at any of the Russell Group universities where they recommend Further Mathematics to complement other A Levels taken. Students are Fast-Tracked to sit the general A Level in Mathematics at the end of the first year. The A Level Further Mathematics is studied in the second year, leading to two A Levels at the end of the programme. This course enables the students to study four A Levels overall if they choose to.

In the first year, you will study Pure Core Maths with elements of Mechanics and Statistics.

Pure Maths – Algebra, Co-ordinate Geometry, Proof, Polynomials, Calculus, Trigonometry, Exponentials, Logarithms, Binomial Theorem, Algebra and Functions, Further Calculus, Further Trigonometry, Parametric Equations and Numerical Methods.
Mechanics – Vectors, Kinematics, Motion with Constant Acceleration, Forces & Motion, Newton’s Laws of Motion, Objects in Contact, Projectiles, Moments, Kinematics and Dynamics.
Statistics – Probability, Statistical Diagrams, Standard Deviation, Binomial Distribution, Hypothesis Testing, Conditional Probability, Normal Distribution and Further Hypothesis Testing.

In the second year, you will study Further Pure Maths with a choice of two
from Decision Maths, Statistics and Mechanics.

Further Pure Maths – Complex Numbers, Polar Coordinates, Hyperbolics, Matrices, Complex Roots of Polynomials, Differential Equations, Vectors, DeMoivres Theorem and more complex Calculus.
Mechanics – Work, Energy and Power, Dimensional Analysis, Momentum & Collisions, Circular Motion, Moments & Couples and Centres of Mass.
Statistics – Discrete and Continuous Random Variables, Chi-Squared distribution, Poisson Distribution, Errors and Hypothesis Testing including T-tests.
Decision – Network Flows, Group Theory, Linear Programming & Simplex Method, Game Theory, Graph Theory and Critical Path Analysis.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through exams at the end of each of the 2 years. There will be an opportunity for all students on this course to resit the end of year 1 external exams if they choose to. You will be assessed with rigorous internal exams that will build you up until the final exams. You will also be taught how to perform data analysis on a large data set.

What do I need?

You will need GCSEs with 2 grade 6s and 3 grade 5s incuding a grade 6 in Maths at the higher tier.

Where can it take me?

You can progress to an exciting range of higher level courses, including Teaching and HNC/Ds in Applied Biology, Applied Chemistry, Computing and Graphics, Web Design or Multi Media. Alternatively, you could study for a degree in a related subject, such as Mathematics, Science, Medicine, Computing & Engineering, Physics, Engineering or Philosophy.

This course is also ideal if you are interested in a career in Science, Engineering, Finance, Accountancy, Medicine, Teaching or IT.
