IT - Level 3 - Certificate - Year 1

This course will develop your learning and skills in IT and computer systems at a higher level. It covers different aspects of Computer Science and IT, including computer hardware, software, networks, legislation, industry bodies, how organisations use IT and information, information security, threats to data and protection methods.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by a combination of mandatory examinations and coursework assignments including the following three compulsory exams:

Fundamentals of IT – 90-minute exam at the end of Year 1

Global Information – 90-minute exam at the end of Year 1

Cyber Security – 60-minute exam in Year 2

Two additional Year 2 optional units chosen from Project Management, Product Development, Systems Analysis & Design and Internet of Everything are assessed using assignments and coursework.

What do I need?

You will need to achieve at least 5 GCSEs at Grade 5 and above, including English Language or Literature.

Where can it take me?

  • Halesowen College - you can progress to an exciting range of higher level courses, including HNC/HND Computing. An Apprenticeship may also be an option.
  • University - related degrees including Computer Systems, Business Information Systems, Software Engineering or Computer Network Security.
  • Careers - This course is ideal if you are interested in a career as an IT Technician, Web Developer, Programmer, Database Analyst or IT Teacher.

Additional information

This course should be combined with A Levels.

Good combinations include Graphic Communication and Business.
