About this course
Applied Science is an alternative to studying Science at A Level and develops a blend of science technical and academic skills that will support your progression to university or into employment.
This course is ideal if you have an interest in Science and wish to pursue a career in Biomedical Science or related careers such as Biochemistry, Microbiology, Radiography, Pharmaceutical Science or Nursing.
It is a great option if you would like to study a range of Science subjects without the pressure of a 100% exam based course.
What will I learn?
Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which are within a range of core units such as the Principles and Applications of Science, Laboratory Techniques and their Applications, will help you to develop the individual learning skills that are valued by employers and in higher education.
You will also study a range of optional units related to Biomedical, Radiography and Microbiology.
How will I be assessed?
Overall 42% will be by external assessment, including written exams, an assignment and marked practical and 58% by internal assessment such as completing coursework, practical investigations, presentations and open book tests.
What do I need?
You will need to achieve at least 5 GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above including English, 2 Sciences (including Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics) and Maths.

- College - Applied Biology or Applied Chemistry HNC/D, or choose from a range of HNC/D, Foundation Degrees and professional qualifications
- University - related degree in a range of Science related subjects
You will be expected to participate in enrichment days that involve assessments and practicals.
You will also be required to gain work experience during your study days to further develop your knowledge and skills and improve your employability and success in higher education.
