At Halesowen College we are keen to build partnerships with local schools to support in develop a high quality staff development offer for your workforce.  

We have a range of free courses which are a fantastic addition to your current staff CPD offer. These are available for your staff to work on at their own pace and in their own time. They will have a dedicated assessor who will give support and feedback to ensure that they get the most from their qualification.  

The courses which may be useful to your workforce are all nationally recognised, accredited qualifications and include Level 2 qualifications in; Understanding Autism, Understanding Behaviour that Challenges, Awareness of Mental Health Problems and Understanding Children and Young Peoples Mental Health.  

For members of your school community we also offer the Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools, Level 1 Award in Safeguarding in a Learning Environment and the Level 2 and 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning qualifications.

Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools 

This qualification prepares learners for further learning and training whilst developing an understanding of the teaching and learning environment in a school setting. It covers areas such as how to support the well-being of a child or young person and child and young person development.  This qualification is aimed at a range of learners who are thinking of working in a school setting including: young people, mature learners, learners with special educational needs or where English is an additional language. 

Level 1 Award Safeguarding in a Learning Environment 

This qualification aims to provide learners with the suitable knowledge and understanding that everyone has the right to learn, to be safe and to be respected. Learners will be able to make sure that they are being provided with a safe and secure learning environment that promotes their health and wellbeing. This will enable them and their peers to take responsibility for their own and others’ safety and be able to enjoy learning and progress in their lives.  This qualification is aimed at a range of learners who are thinking of working in a school setting including: young people, mature learners, learners with special educational needs or where English is an additional language. 

Level 1 Award Introduction to Early Years Setting 

This qualification develops a basic knowledge of childcare in early years settings. It covers working with children up to the age of 5 years old. The units include subjects such as the value of play, roles and responsibilities of carers and volunteers and the importance of developing links in the local community. 

Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools, and the
Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning 

The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships.

It’s aimed at learners working in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges. 

Level 3 Award and Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning 

This qualification will provide an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children or young people in primary, secondary or special schools. It includes learning about children and young people’s development, safeguarding their welfare, and communication.  The Level 3 Certificate is suitable for those working in unsupervised roles that support pupils’ learning. 

Access to HE Diploma (Education) 

The Access to Education Teaching Diploma is excellent preparation for people who wish to train to be teachers or to study related courses at University level. This course is especially designed for mature students who do not have the necessary academic qualifications to apply for University level study but who wish to study at University level in the future. 

Level 3 Award in Education and Training 

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is designed to give people the knowledge and confidence to teach in the post 16 education sector. This could be as a trainer in the private training industry or as a teacher/lecturer in further education. 

This qualification replaces the old PTLLS course. Certifying people to teach at a nationally accredited standard. 

Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training 

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first stage teaching qualification that will give candidates a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. It includes the use of initial and diagnostic assessments and requires candidates to plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning, carry out assessments of and for learning and use resources effectively. 

Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training 

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is a teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practice requirement. It is an ‘in service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers/trainers in England. It may be possible for pre-service teachers/trainers (defined as those who are not formally contracted as teachers/trainers) to also complete this qualification. All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 100 hours of teaching. 

Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism

Our Understanding Autism course will give you an understanding of autism and the principles of supporting individuals with autism. You will look at the person-centred approach and the influence that positive communication methods can have and will gain an understanding of how individuals with autism can be supported to live healthy and fulfilled lives. It is ideal if you are already working in or intending to work within either health and social care or education. 

Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Behaviour that Challenges 

This qualification aims to explore possible causes which could explain why people behave as they do, helping you to develop your understanding and deal with these situations in an appropriate way. You will look at the impact and possible justification for these behaviours, considering what the root cause could be. This course will equip you with pro-active strategies to support positive behaviour. It is ideal if you are already working in or intending to work within either health and social care or education. 

The Level 3 Award in Preparing to Work in Home Based Childcare 

The Level 3 Award in Preparing to Work in Home Based Childcare has been developed in collaboration with the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years (PACEY).

This qualification prepares learners to set up a home-based childcare setting as a registered childminder.
