About this course

This qualification will provide learners with a secure understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children or young people in school or college environments. It includes learning about children and young people’s development, safeguarding their welfare and communication and professional relationships.

What will I learn?

There are 11 mandatory units which include the following:

  • Support Health and Safety in a learning environment
  • Understand how to safeguard children and young people
  • Understand how children and young people develop
  • Support English and Maths Skills
  • Support the use of ICT in the learning environment
  • Support assessment for learning

How will I be assessed?

Throughout the course you need to attend a 2 hour monthly taught class, these are offered on a day or evening. During the course you build a portfolio of evidence which is made up of a combination of work from monthly taught classes and visits from an assessor.

During the classes you will also deliver presentations to your peers on a variety of topics relating to children and young people’s development. Your allocated assessor will visit you in your placement on a regular basis carrying out direct observation on your practical abilities.

What do I need?

A high standard of literacy and numeracy skills at a level 2 or above, GCSE at C or above in English and Maths is accepted.

You will need to have been working or volunteering in a school for at least 2 months prior to commencing the course and have secured a 12 hour a week placement at the school for when you start the course.

An interview is required before you are able to enrol on to this course.

A letter from your school placement confirming previous volunteering or work experience plus an agreement of supporting your 12 hours a week placement for the duration of the course is required at your interview.

Course fee (2018/19) - £423.00
This fee includes first sitting of exams and registration fees

You can apply for a Advanced Learning Loan from the Students Loans Company or pay the college directly either as a lump sum or by instalments.

There will be no course cost (£0.00) if you are:
