Why study this course?

Access to HE Radiography course is designed for adult learners who may not hold traditional qualifications such as A Levels, but who want to study at degree level. The course is designed to give relevant academic knowledge and skills before progression to higher education and are widely recognised by universities as alternative qualifications.

The course provides a pathway onto a variety of Higher Education degree courses at different universities or HNC/ HND in Halesowen College. Students have access to a wide range of science degrees at excellent universities, including Radiography, Physiotherapy, Biomedical Science (Birmingham City University), Nutrition and Dietetics (Coventry University), Marine Biology Biodiversity (Swansea University), Nursing and Physiotherapy (Wolverhampton University).

Course content

The course includes a range of different modules designed to give the students relevant skills and knowledge required to progress onto a chosen degree course. Along with the three main modules (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Health Studies) students will also work on their Study Techniques and have a tutorial guidance for a UCAS application.

Access to HE is a 60-credit diploma which constitute the following:

Physical and Biological Science: 45 graded credits from the following modules

Biology

  • Homeostasis and the Endocrine System
  • Nutrition and Digestion
  • Respiration and Circulation
  • The Human Skeletal and Muscular Systems
  • The Nervous System
  • The Urinary System

Physics

  • Physics -wave motions
  • Radioactivity
  • Medical Physics

Health Studies

  • Roles and responsibilities of Health Professionals
  • Mental Health
  • Placement

Skills for Learning: 15 ungraded units from the following modules

  • Academic Study Techniques
  • Progression to HE
  • Numeracy in a Health and Care Context
  • Professional Behaviours – Nursing and Health Professions

There are a range of strategies used to assess each unit on the radiography diploma, these vary and could come in the form of a presentation, a professional discussion, essay, podcast, academic poster, report or video. Each assessment will be marked and graded by your lecturer and then returned to you along with useful feedback and tips for improvement.

Entry Requirements

You require a GCSE grade C/ 4 in English Language or an equivalent qualification, such as L2 Functional Skills English.

It is desirable to have GCSE grade C/ 4 in Maths or an equivalent qualification, such as L2 Functional Skills Maths as well. If not, you can study this alongside your Access Diploma, as you will need it for your degree qualification.
