Studying the AAT Advanced Certificate in Bookkeeping enables students to develop in-depth knowledge and practical skills, including complex bookkeeping tasks, preparation of final accounts for sole traders and partnerships, and handling advanced VAT transactions. Students completing this qualification will be able to confidently manage and maintain accurate financial records in line with current regulations.

The skills gained through this course will enhance employability and open up opportunities for more senior bookkeeping roles or further progression to higher-level AAT qualifications. A student completing this qualification will be able to work with minimal supervision, apply double-entry principles to more complex transactions, and prepare financial statements with confidence. Course content

The qualification is composed of two mandatory units, assessed in two end-of-unit assessments:

  • Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements
  • Tax Processes for Business

Students will develop practical skills in preparing and extending the trial balance, producing final accounts for sole traders and partnerships, managing VAT in line with current legislation, and interpreting financial data. They will also deepen their understanding of the link between business activities and financial statements, ensuring they can produce accurate, compliant, and meaningful financial records.

Entry requirements

Students will need to have completed the AAT Level 2 qualification in Bookkeeping or Accounting or equivalent. Prior experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
