Why study this course?
LEVEL 1
Many adults looking to progress, academically or professionally, are now required to have a Level 2 qualification in English. This course offers English at Level 1 and is designed as a starting point for learners who are not yet ready to complete the Level 2 qualification. The content supports the Level 2 curriculum and successful completion enables progression onto the Level 2 course.
Functional Skills qualifications are widely recognised by employers and institutions as a suitable alternative to GCSE. Many employers were involved in designing the reformed Functional Skills specification in order to address gaps in skills and knowledge needed for the workplace.
Please make sure that Functional Skills is appropriate for your chosen progression route before enrolling.

Course content
LEVEL 1
The course will follow the Pearson (Edexcel) specification for Functional Skills English at Level 1.
The course will be taught via one session per week. Lessons may take place across any of our 3 campuses: Shenstone, Whittingham or Coombs.
You will be required to complete regular assessments in order for us to track your progress.
The course will be assessed via an internally assessed speaking and listening component and a single examination in Summer 2023. This comprises two papers – a reading component and a writing component. You are also required to complete two speaking and listening assessments. There may be an opportunity for examinations to be taken earlier in the course, which will be determined on an individual basis depending on on-going assessment.
Examinations will take place at our Whittingham Road campus.
It is assumed that students will need to carry out a minimum of 2 hours independent study each week

Entry requirements
LEVEL 1
There are no formal entry requirements. Suitability for this course will be assessed via an initial skills assessment.
All students take an online diagnostic assessment. The diagnostic will identify strengths and areas needing support, and the most appropriate English course for each learner. The diagnostic test is taken prior to the start of the course and takes about 1 hour.
Entry requirements
LEVEL 2
You must hold a GCSE English qualification at Grade D/3, or a Functional Skills English qualification at Level 1
Other applicants will be considered on an individual basis following an initial skills assessment.
Materials
Writing materials and an exercise book/folder will be needed.
Any Functional Skills revision guide will support this course but purchase of textbooks is not essential as we will provide all necessary resources.
Day, time and duration
Level 1 & 2 Day – Tuesday 9:30-12pm
Level 1 & 2 Afternoon – Thursday 1pm-3:30pm
Level 1 & 2 Evening – Tuesday 6pm-8:30pm
Level 2 Online – Wednesday 1pm-3:30pm and Monday 6pm-8:30pm

Fees
This course is free for any adult who does not yet hold a grade 4 (grade C) English qualification.
