Why study this course?

This course is suitable for adults already working in primary, special or secondary schools assisting teaching staff on a paid or voluntary basis and who do not have a relevant qualification but wish to update their knowledge and skills.  It allows you to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting, teaching and learning in schools.

Course content

There are 11 units to complete which include: 

  • Children and Young Peoples’ Development,  
  • The Requirements of Safeguarding,  
  • The Importance of Equality, 
  • Diversity and Inclusion  
  • Supporting Children and Young People During Play and Leisure 

During the course you will attend college or one of our community sites where you will build a portfolio of evidence which will consist of your assignments, reflective accounts and observations.  

During the course you will be visited at your placement regularly by a qualified, experienced assessor who will observe your practical competency.   

Entry requirements

You need to have secured a placement in a school of your choice to carry out your placement for 9 hours a week. This must be shown at an interview. 

We will also carry out a DBS check once you have enrolled. 

 You are expected to have sufficient literacy and numeracy skills at level 1 or above.
