Animal Care Level 1

If you are interested in working with a variety of animals, then this course will give you relevant hands on experience. We provide excellent Animal Care education in specialist facilities providing housing for exotic mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, as well as domestic small animals. The course is suitable for students who have little or no experience with animals but are keen to gain an insight in to a rewarding career in this area. This course will involve a combination of hands-on practical skills, such as handling, cleaning, feeding and health checking a range of animal species.

You will need to study Maths and/or English as part of your study program as well as an additional Science qualification, to prepare you for further study in Animal Care. All students must complete work experience in the Animal Care sector in order to gain industry experience. This is arranged through our work placement officer and includes some local fieldwork to gain valuable practical experience.

How will I be assessed?

All assessments are completed through coursework, including theory assignments with given deadlines and practical assessments with a range of small animal species.

What do I need?

A Literacy and Numeracy test plus a satisfactory interview.

You need to take part in practical and handling tasks for a range of animals to include species of small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects and birds.

Where can it take me?

You could progress to Animal Care – Level 2

Additional information

You could consider a junior level role in the Animal Care Sector, such as Junior Kennel/Cattery Hand or Junior Yard Groom, although further training is advisable. Candidates will need to buy their own labcoat, further details on this to be given at induction.
