Applied Science - Level 3 - Year 1

Applied Science is an alternative to studying Science at A Level and develops a blend of technical and academic Science skills that will support your progression to university or employment.

This is a great option if you would like to study a range of Science subjects without the pressure of a 100% exam based course.

Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which are within a range of core units such as the Principles and Applications of Science, Laboratory Techniques and their Applications, will help you to develop the individual learning skills that are valued by employers and in higher education.

How will I be assessed?

Overall 42% will be by external assessment, including written exams, an assignment and marked practical and 58% by internal assessment such as completing coursework, practical investigations, presentations and open book tests.

What do I need?

You will need to have achieved at least 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 and above, including English, Maths and Science.

Where can it take me?

  • College Progression – you can progress to an exciting range of higher level courses, including Applied Biology or Applied Chemistry HNC/D. An Apprenticeship could also be an option.
  • University - related degrees including a range of Science subjects.

Additional information

You will complete a work placement within an organisation that relates to your career aspirations, a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be required for some work placements.

You will be expected to take part in visits to scientific or industrial organisations relating to assessment on your course.
