Apprenticeship - Veterinary Nursing - Level 3

This 3 year Apprenticeship is ideal for anyone looking for a career in a veterinary practice working with small animals. The role of the Veterinary Nurse is diverse, from supporting Veterinary Surgeons to carrying out surgical procedures, caring for sick animals and working with clients to ensure the best patient care. This Apprenticeship allows you to achieve the competencies of the Veterinary Nurse, meaning you can progress into a range of specialist roles.

You will complete a range of subjects including:

  • Professional Communication
  • Comparative Anatomy
  • Animal Health, Welfare & Husbandry
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Laboratory Diagnostics
  • Theatre Practice
  • Anaesthesia
  • Emergency & Critical Care

How will I be assessed?

The Veterinary Nursing qualification is achieved through a combination of examinations, coursework and completion of the nursing progress log, which is a reflective log of your skills development and is supported by a clinical coach supplied by your practice.

What do I need?

You will need to have achieved at least 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 and above, including English, Maths and a Science subject.

Where can it take me?

  • College Progression – you could progress to an exciting range of higher level courses, including Animal Management HND
  • University – related degree including Veterinary Nursing & Practice Management and Veterinary Physiotherapy
  • Careers - Continued employment in Veterinary Nursing, which could include coaching student Veterinary Nurses or specialising in a specific area, such as surgical nursing, anaesthesia, medical nursing or nursing exotic species. Alternatively, you may choose to progress into Teaching, Pharmaceutical/Technical Sales roles or business management – all supporting veterinary practices.

    Industry work experience is encouraged to support your application for any available Apprenticeships, but this cannot be arranged through Halesowen College.

    You need to be in employment in a training practice – College staff may be able to help you, but you will probably need to apply for vacancies on the National Apprenticeship online vacancy website.
