Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) - Year 1

Mathematical Studies is a stand-alone AS qualification aimed at students who know Maths will be useful, but don’t want to or can’t do a full A Level. This course will cover advanced statistics along with estimation techniques and financial mathematics in real life context. It is worth exactly the same UCAS points as any other AS qualification.

The course allows you to deepen and extend your Mathematics to be better prepared for university or employment. It is taught by specialist A Level teachers.

How will I be assessed?

There are 2 calculator papers with an assessment time of 1½ hours to suit students’ concentration levels.

Paper 1 is compulsory for all students. The papers have a mix of question types and there is a focus on realistic contexts to help you enjoy and value Maths. There is also use of pre-release materials to help prepare you for examinations.

Paper 2 is one of the following options:

  • Statistical Techniques
  • Critical Path and Risk Analysis
  • Graphical Techniques.

The option will be decided between the teacher and student

What do I need?

You will need to achieve at least 5 GCSEs – 2 at Grade 6 and 3 at Grade 5 including Maths.

Where can it take me?

  • College progression – you can progress to an exciting range of higher level courses including Teaching.
  • University – related degrees including Economics, Business, Psychology, Mathematics and Statistics.
  • Careers - This course is ideal if you are interested in a career in Economics, Business, Teaching, Accounting and Architecture.

Additional information

There will be an emphasis on using technology and advanced calculators. You will learn how to use Excel and Geogebra for statistical analysis of raw data and advanced calculators for summary statistics
