Returning to study GCSE Biology as an adult isn’t just about gaining a qualification—it’s about opening doors. Whether you’re looking to change careers, support your children with their studies, or simply challenge yourself, evening classes at college offer a supportive and flexible way to learn. Biology helps you understand the world around you—from how your body works to the science behind health, medicine, and the environment—making it both practical and fascinating.
With the option to study during the day (depending on interest) or evening, this intensive one year course will give you the opportunity to progress onto careers that need a GCSE in Science, such as Primary Education, Nursing and Paramedics.
The evening class takes place in one of our dedicated science laboratories.
The course has 18 units that include human biology, diseases, genetics and ecology. The course content is assessed by two exam papers, each covering half the content. There are 10 practicals to complete. These will help you apply your knowledge and the skills you gain will also be tested across the two exam papers.
It can also be a crucial stepping stone into a wide range of careers, including nursing, healthcare support, midwifery, laboratory work, environmental science, and roles within the NHS or care sector.
It can open pathways into degree programmes in fields like nursing, paramedic science, biomedical science, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and environmental or forensic science.
A good level of English and maths is required but a GCSE pass in these subjects is not required.
It is important to be aware; that the pace is naturally more intensive than a traditional course, and you’ll be expected to reinforce your learning with some independent study at home. With the support of specialist Biology lecturers and clear guidance throughout, you’ll be well equipped to keep up and succeed provided you’re ready to stay engaged and commit a little extra time outside of class
