Why college?

Types of courses available

Colleges offer different levels of qualifications. Colleges also tend to be more practical in the sense that you will gain a lot more hands-on experience.

Timetables and lessons

Sixth form is very similar to secondary school. You are typically busy throughout the day with lessons and in some cases you’ll get free periods for self-directed study.

In college, it’s a lot more relaxed and there could be several hours between lessons and maybe even a day of the week with no lessons depending on your timetable. Class sizes are likely to be a bit bigger in college and you’ll be treated more as an adult so it’s up to you to turn up to your lessons!

Dress Code

A dress code tends not to exist in college, so feel free to wear what you want and dress comfortably.

For those in sixth form, it depends on your school. Some schools will be the same as a college with no real dress code. In other schools, it will be as formal as secondary school with a uniform or more formal clothing required.

Other students

When you go to sixth form, you will be amongst the oldest students at the school. The rest of the students are the younger ones in the years below you. When you go to college you’ll share the space with a diverse group of people of different ages and backgrounds, although other students on your chosen course are likely to be around the same age as you.

Location and size

The location for sixth form will typically be the same as the secondary school you went to, so it will be familiar. When you go to college it is likely to be in a central location so you might have to travel a bit further. Colleges also tend to have bigger campuses, with more buildings and more students than what you will be used to at school.
