The AAT Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping is an ideal starting point for learners who are completely new to accounting, bookkeeping or finance. This entry-level qualification introduces the basic role of a bookkeeper and helps learners understand why accurate and up-to-date financial records are important in every business.

This course is particularly suitable for learners who have little or no previous bookkeeping experience and want to build confidence before progressing to Level 2. It may also appeal to those considering a career change, returning to education, supporting a small business, or wanting to understand the basics of bookkeeping for work or personal development.

Potential career routes include cashier, clerical assistant, trainee bookkeeper, accounts administrator.

The course provides a pathway to the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping or the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting.

Course content

Bookkeeping Fundamentals introduces students to the role of a bookkeeper and simple bookkeeping techniques, while providing an understanding on why it’s important to keep accurate and up to date financial information in business. Students will learn how to identify a range of bookkeeping transactions including income, expenses, and profit and loss, as well as gaining an understanding of the benefits and risks associated with bookkeeping software and the importance of ethical behaviour.
