This course is suitable for adults already working in Primary, special or Secondary schools assisting teaching staff on a paid or voluntary basis and who do not have a relevant qualification but wish to update their knowledge and skills. It allows you to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting, teaching and learning in schools.
There are 11 units to complete which include children and young people’s development, the requirements of safeguarding, the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion plus supporting children and young people during play and leisure.
During the course you will attend college or one of our community sites once a week, where you will build a portfolio of evidence which will consist of your assignments, reflective accounts and observations. During the course you will be visited at your placement regularly by a qualified, experienced assessor where she will observe your practical competency.
All units are internally assessed with no exam at the end. You must complete all assignments and your practical hours of 300 hours before completion.
Functional Skills level 2 in English and Functional Skills level 1 in Maths (or equivalent grades). Evidence of achievements must be seen at interview.
You must have been volunteering in a school over the last 3 to 6 months and be able to provide evidence of this.
A placement must also have been secured in a school of your choice to carry out your placement of 2 days a week. Again evidence of this must be shown at interview. You will need to be in Year 1 upwards to cover this qualification, supporting children in maths, English and ICT within the learning environment.
An understanding of the basic verbs such as describe, explain and identify.
A pen, paper, lever arch folder and enthusiasm! The access to a laptop would be benefical
w/c 14th September to w/c 7th June – every Tuesday 9.30-11.30 at college (venue TBC)
