The Level 2 Early Years Practitioner Apprenticeship is a program that combines on-the-job training with classroom-based learning. It is designed to help individuals gain the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to become a qualified Level 2 Early Years Practitioner.

The apprenticeship covers a range of Early Years related skills, including:

  • Child Development
  • Health and Safety
  • Working with parents and carers
  • Safeguarding

You will need to have a Grade 3 in maths and English. If GCSE English or maths is not achieved, an equivalent Level 2 Functional Skills may be acceptable. If you are16-18, English and / or maths is a mandatory part of the apprenticeship. If you are 19+, English and / or maths is an optional part of the apprenticeship that is decided by your employer whether you retake or not.

You must be employed in a relevant role, or have an employer lined up to begin your apprenticeship.

The apprenticeship is assessed through an end-point assessment, which includes a Vocational Competence Observation, Professional Practice Test and Professional discussion.

You will gain a nationally recognised qualification in Early Years Education and Care.

The Level 2 Early Years Practitioner is the start of your learning journey in the sector and you are able to progress to higher level courses including the L3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship, once you have passed this course.

The Level 2 Early Years Practitioner Apprenticeship typically takes 12-18 months to complete and involves:

  • On-the-job training: You will work alongside experienced practitioners in a nursery, pre-school or childminding service, learning how to provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment for children to learn and develop.
  • Classroom-based learning: You will attend training sessions at a local college or training provider, where you will learn about child development, play-based learning, safeguarding, and health and safety.
