If you are interested in working with a variety of animals, then this course will give you relevant hands-on experience. We provide excellent Animal Care education in specialist facilities providing housing for exotic mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, as well as domestic small animals.
Students will cover key topics including practical animal health, animal biology, work placement in animal care, animal welfare, animal behaviour assessment, and safe handling, as well as feeding, accommodation, and moving animals. Students will learn to perform health assessments, administer treatments, understand animal anatomy and physiology, and apply their knowledge in real-world settings. The course emphasises ethical considerations, legal aspects of animal welfare, safe handling techniques, behavioural assessments and meeting the nutritional and housing needs of various species, equipping students with comprehensive skills for a career in animal care and welfare. All students must complete 75 hours of work experience in an approved animal-based work placement.
You will need to have achieved at least 4 GCSEs at Grade 3 and above, including English, Maths and Science. It is a requirement, however, that you retake GCSE English and Maths as part of your programme, if you do not have Grade 4. This will ensure you can progress to a Level 3 course or apprenticeship, and will improve your future employment prospects. Due to the structure of this course, all students need to be well organised, motivated and maintain good attendance throughout.
Assessment is through assignment-based coursework that evidences both theoretical knowledge and practical abilities. Coursework will need to be completed for 4 units with the remaining 2 being examined units. Students will complete 2 external exams, an online Biology exam and a written Animal Welfare exam. Each external assessment will be taken under specified conditions, then marked by Pearson and a grade awarded. Learners must achieve both external units at Pass grade or above to achieve the qualification.
You can progress to Level 3 vocational courses, including Animal Management. You could consider a junior position working as a Pet Shop Assistant, Kennel & Cattery Assistant, Animal Nursing Assistant or Trainee Zoo Keeper.
Candidates will need to buy their own labcoat, further details on this to be given at induction.
