If you are interested in working with a variety of animals, then this course will give you relevant hands on experience. The course is suitable for students with a passion for animals who are keen to gain an insight in to a rewarding career in this area. This course will involve a combination of hands-on practical skills, such as handling, cleaning, feeding and health checking a range of animal species.

You will need to study Maths and/or English as part of your study program as well as an additional Science qualification, to prepare you for further study in Animal Care. All students must complete work experience in the Animal Care sector in order to gain industry experience. This is arranged through our work placement officer and includes some local fieldwork to gain valuable practical experience.

A Literacy and Numeracy test plus a satisfactory interview.

You need to take part in practical and handling tasks for a range of animals to include species of small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects and birds.

All assessments are completed through coursework, including theory assignments with given deadlines and practical assessments with a range of small animal species. Functional Skills/GCSE Maths and English exams will also form part of your program and assessment.

You could progress to Animal Care Level 2 or Dog Grooming level 2.

You could consider a junior level role in the Animal Care Sector, such as Junior Kennel/Cattery Hand or Junior Yard Groom, although further training is advisable. Candidates will need to buy their own labcoat, further details on this to be given at induction.
