Biology is the study of living organisms and how they interact with each other and the environment they live in. During this course, you will study and learn about a wide range of biological concepts. In the first year, key areas you will cover include Biological Molecules, Enzymes, Health and Disease and Evolution. In the second year, your knowledge will further develop in areas including Respiration, Photosynthesis, Excretion and Genetics. During both years you will also cover a range of mathematical and statistical methods to analyse biological data. A range of teaching approaches will be used to help develop your independent study and research skills such as presentations, group work and self-evaluation activities.
Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to participate in a range of biological and ecological investigations and as a result you will develop a number of practical skills.
As mentioned above mathematical and statistical skills are vital in A Level Biology and your final examinations will include at least 10% maths based questions. With this in mind we support your mathematical skills by asking that if you are not taking A Level Maths alongside your A Level Biology that you complete our Mathematical Studies AS Level in your 1st year of study, in which you will follow the Statistical Techniques option route.
You will need to have GCSEs with 2 grade 6s and 3 grade 5s including grade 6 in Double Science or Biology and a grade 5 in Maths.
The course is assessed by examinations.
You can progress to an exciting range of higher level courses, including Applied Biology HNC/D. Other options include a related degree in subjects such as Biochemistry, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Geology, Pharmacy, Zoology, Plant Biology and Psychology.
Biology A Level combines well with Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Maths and Psychology.
You will also be enrolled on the Certificate in Maths (1 Year Level 3 Maths course) to support the mathematical skills and content delivered as part of the A-Level Biology specification.
