The course is designed not only to give you an insight into the science, mathematics and ‘art’ of how computers work, but more importantly will encourage a new way of thinking about the solutions to world problems.

You will learn about different components and how each of them interacts to make a working system. Through a range of units, you will be taught to think in an abstract and computational way and you will complete a practical project in a computing field.

You will also discover how computers hold and manipulate data using algorithms and ‘in-memory’ data structures, how machines ‘learn’ and how they communicate with each other over a network. In addition, you will learn how to write your own programs using the widely-used programming language Python.

As well as introducing you to the world of computational thinking, the course will develop your problem-solving skills, which can be applied throughout all of your subjects.

You will need to have GCSEs with 2 grade 6s and 3 grade 5s including a grade 6 in Maths and a grade 5 in English Language.

The course is assessed through a combination of examinations (80%) and coursework (20%).

You can progress to an exciting range of higher level courses, including Computing HNC/D. Alternatively, you could study a related degree, such as Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Engineering and Software Engineering.

Computer Science A Level traditionally combines well with Maths & Science, however any subject where analytical and/or abstract thinking is important would be suitable. The most important aspect is that you have a passion for the subject.

This course is ideal if you wish to pursue any career where problem solving and analytical skills are important, or specifically as a Computer Scientist, Systems Developer, Systems Analyst, Engineering or wish to pursue higher qualifications in any other Computing specialism.
