The T-Level pathway in Digital Software Development is equivalent to three A-Levels. Upon completion of a T-Level, there are various opportunities available, allowing you to expand your knowledge, skills, and experience to progress into a wide range of careers, including but not limited to:

  • Software Development Technician
  • Junior Developer
  • Junior Programmer
  • Junior Application Support Analyst

This course has been developed in collaboration with employers and combines classroom-based learning with work-based experiences to equip you with the technical skills and workplace knowledge required for a career in the digital sector.

You will complete both a Core Technical Qualification and a Digital Support and Security Specialism, alongside an industry placement lasting at least 315 hours.

The core units that students will be taught throughout the qualification include:

  • Problem Solving
  • Introduction to Programming
  • Emerging Issues
  • Legislation and Regulatory Requirements
  • Business Context
  • Data
  • Digital Environments
  • Security

Additionally, you will develop the skills of a Digital Software Developer, including:

  • Analyse a problem to define requirements and acceptance criteria
  • Apply ethical principles and manage risks in line with legal and regulatory requirements
  • Design
  • Implement a solution using at least two appropriate languages
  • Testing a software solution
  • Change, maintain and support software

You will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths and English, as you will be expected to create professional reports and conduct data analysis.

Year 1:

  • Route Core Element Exam A: A written exam covering the core content delivered in the first year of the qualification.
  • Route Core Element Exam B: A second written exam on core content from Year 1.
  • Employer Set Project: A series of controlled assessments to demonstrate knowledge in a professional setting.

Year 2:

  • Occupational Specialism: A series of controlled assessments to demonstrate knowledge based on a given scenario.
  • Placement: A 315-hour industry placement, during which you will be assessed in a real-world employment setting.

There will also be ongoing assessments in preparation for the end-of-year exams, including project work and practical demonstrations. For example, you may be tasked with being given a scenario and creating a software solution based on the scenario.

Most students who complete a T-Level go on to either employment or an apprenticeship with the employer who hosted their work placement. Alternatively, students may continue their studies at university, pursuing a degree in their chosen field before entering the workforce.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a T-Level qualification in Digital Support and Security.

The Digital Support and Security T-Level specifically specialises in Software Development skills.
