If you are interested in working with a variety of animals, then this course will give you relevant hands on experience. We provide excellent Animal Care education in specialist facilities providing housing for exotic mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, as well as domestic small animals. The course is suitable for students with a passion for animals who are keen to gain an insight in to a rewarding career in this area. This course will involve a combination of hands-on practical skills, such as handling, cleaning, feeding and health checking a range of animal species.

The SEG Awards Level 1 Certificate in Practical Small Animal Care Skills is a smaller course designed to cover key animal subjects while also focussing on ensuring learners have the potential to achieve and progress with the animal care department. Topics include handling animals, animals in the wild, care of animals and feeding animals.

Due to the small class sizes within this cohort learners would normally have an EHCP or significant support needs. Ideally E3 or grades in Maths and English but these are not strict requirements.

All assessments are completed through coursework, including theory assignments with given deadlines and practical assessments with a range of small animal species. Functional Skills/GCSE Maths and English exams will also form part of your program and assessment.

You could progress to Animal Care Level 2 or Dog Grooming level 2.

You could consider a junior level role in the Animal Care Sector, such as Junior Kennel/Cattery Hand or Junior Yard Groom, although further training is advisable. Candidates will need to buy their own labcoat, further details on this to be given at induction.
