Did you know that French is one of the most widely spoken languages with over 120 million speakers worldwide? With increased globalisation and the opportunities offered by email, social networking and video-conferencing, a modern foreign language such as French is an enormous asset in many spheres of life and work.

French A Level involves the development of four aspects of the language (Reading, Writing, Listening & Speaking). It will enhance your understanding of French-speaking countries and their cultural differences.

During the course, you will learn through a variety of exercises including reading and listening comprehension from a range of media sources. You will also present information, opinions and arguments either orally or in writing.

Through a range of units, you will consider many aspects of French-speaking society and culture, including the Changing Nature of the Family and A Culture Proud of its Heritage. A study of political life will look at topics such as, The Right to Vote for Teenagers.

You will also study a film and a book and have the opportunity to complete an Individual Research Project (IRP) in preparation for your speaking exam.

The first term includes a diagnostic and bridging course to ensure you have the necessary basic knowledge and skills to achieve your full potential in French.

You will need GCSEs with 2 grade 6s and 3 grade 5s including grade 6 in French and grade 5 in English Language. Retaking GCSE Maths as part of your programme is required if you do not have grade 4.

A combination of assessments includes

Paper 1 – Listening & Reading comprehension and writing assessment (Translation) – 2 hours 30 minutes

Paper 2 – Writing assessment (Essays on the film and book) – 2 hours

Paper 3 – Speaking (presentation & discussion of IRP and stimulus card) – 23 minutes, including 5 minutes preparation

You can progress to an exciting range of higher level courses, including Teaching and Business HNC/D. Alternatively, a degree in a related subject, such as French, Marketing or Business, could be an option.

French A Level combines well with Business, Economics, English, History and another Modern Foreign Language.

This course is ideal if you are interested in a career as a Teacher, Linguist, Journalist, Translator, Interpreter, Banker or Travel Representative.
