Are you fascinated by paintings, sculpture, architecture and the stories they tell about our world? Our History of Art A Level will take you on an inspiring journey through time — from classical antiquity to cutting-edge contemporary practice.

Taught by a dedicated team of practising arts professionals, this course helps you develop critical thinking, analytical skills and visual literacy, opening up new ways of seeing and understanding global culture. Through interactive seminars, gallery visits, and one-to-one support, you’ll gain confidence in discussing and interpreting some of the world’s most iconic artworks.

Explore a rich variety of themes, artists and movements, including:

Renaissance masterpieces and their cultural impact

Modernism and the changing face of art in the 20th century

Contemporary art practice and debates

Architecture and design in historical context

Your learning will be brought to life through lively discussion, research projects and real-world case studies.

You will need GCSEs with 2 grade 6s and 3 grade 5s including English Language. A GCSE Art or Design qualification would be advantageous.

A portfolio or Level 2 Art qualification may also be considered

Your final grade is awarded through two written exams on Visual analysis and themes (50%), and Periods (50%), testing your ability to analyse, compare and contextualise works of art.

Studying History of Art A Level can lead to higher education courses such as:

Art & Design degrees

Architecture, Curation, Museum Studies, Cultural Heritage and more

Graduates go on to careers in museums and galleries, teaching, journalism, arts administration, conservation, and cultural project management.

History of Art combines perfectly with subjects like English Literature, Fine Art, History, Photography, and Textiles. It’s an ideal choice if you see your future in creative industries, heritage, cultural analysis or beyond.
