This apprenticeship combines theory and practical training to prepare you for a career in the fitness industry. You will develop the skills needed to work effectively in gyms, health clubs, and other fitness environments, supporting clients to achieve their health and wellbeing goals.

You will cover a range of topics, including:

  • Exercise programme design and progression
  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise and fitness
  • Health and lifestyle assessment techniques
  • Nutrition to support physical activity and performance
  • Client motivation and behaviour change
  • Delivering one-to-one and group-based sessions
  • Business skills for personal trainers
  • Customer experience in fitness environments

Learning takes place through a blend of classroom sessions, online learning, and work based training with your employer.

To apply, you will need:

  • To be aged 16 or over and a UK resident
  • A Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification
  • English and Maths at Level 2 (GCSE grade 4/C or above, or equivalent)
  • An employer to support your apprenticeship (support available via the Employer Engagement Team)
  • A positive attitude and interest in fitness and helping others

Assessment is carried out throughout the programme and includes:

  • Workplace observations
  • Coursework and assignments
  • Case studies and portfolio evidence
  • Professional discussions and reflective accounts

You will also complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), which includes:

  • Practical observation with questioning
  • Session plan and client log
  • Professional discussion based on your portfolio

On successful completion, you could progress into:

  • Personal Trainer or Fitness Coach roles
  • Health and wellbeing careers
  • Self-employment as a freelance Personal Trainer
  • Further study, including higher apprenticeships or courses in Sport and Exercise Science

You will receive ongoing support from Halesowen College staff, including regular workplace visits and feedback to help you succeed.
