Course Code: BA3027A

Level: 3

Study mode: Full time

Duration: 18 months

This apprenticeship is ideal for those looking to develop specialist cyber security skills in a high-demand and fast-growing sector. Apprentices learn to protect digital systems, monitor security threats, support incident response activities and contribute to secure business operations, preparing them for roles in security operations or progression to higher-level apprenticeships.

  • Cyber security principles: confidentiality, integrity and availability
  • Threats, vulnerabilities and risk management
  • Security tools including firewalls, anti-malware and monitoring systems
  • Incident response and security event handling
  • Security policies, compliance and legislation
  • Supporting secure IT environments and users
  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent) are recommended.
  • Suitable for individuals in an IT, digital support or cyber-related role.
  • Previous experience or a Level 2 qualification in IT, Digital Technologies, Cyber Security or Computing would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Employers must provide opportunities to undertake cyber-related activities and responsibilities within the workplace.

You must be employed in a relevant role, or have an employer lined up to begin your apprenticeship.

Assessment takes place throughout the programme through practical workplace activities, professional discussions, portfolio evidence and progress reviews. Apprentices will demonstrate their ability to identify and respond to security threats, support incident management, apply security controls and contribute to maintaining secure digital environments.

The apprenticeship concludes with an independent End-Point Assessment (EPA), which assesses the apprentice’s competence against the requirements of the Cyber Security Technician standard and confirms readiness for occupational practice.

Progression opportunities include higher-level cyber security, digital infrastructure and networking apprenticeships, including the Level 4 Network Engineer (ST0127) apprenticeship where appropriate.

Typical job roles include:

  • Cyber Security Technician
  • Junior Cyber Security Analyst
  • Security Operations Centre (SOC) Analyst
  • Information Security Technician
  • Cyber Support Technician
  • Security Administrator

You will need access to a laptop and be capable of running virtual labs.
