Our VTCT Skills Entry Level Award in Hair and Beauty Skills (Entry 3) is a practical, supportive and learner-focused programme designed to help you develop confidence, independence and essential skills within the Hair & Beauty industry.

Whether you already dream of working in a salon or simply want to explore your interests, this course gives you the opportunity to try new skills, discover what you enjoy and build your confidence in a practical environment.

Course content

The programme is designed around our learners. Alongside the mandatory unit: Creating Your Own Hair and Beauty Image, we will get to know your interests and strengths and introduce additional Hair & Beauty activities that you will enjoy and find meaningful.

This unit will help you develop practical personal care and presentation skills while exploring how Hair & Beauty can help you express your own individual style.

Units include:

Salon care, hygiene and professionalism
Introduction to the Hair & Beauty industry
Hands and nails – including caring for your hands and applying nail polish
Hair care – including shampooing, conditioning and blow-drying your own hair
Tools and equipment – developing safe and confident use of basic Hair & Beauty equipment
Communication skills – developing confidence when communicating with others
Skills for progression to your next step

You may also have the opportunity to develop skills in other areas of Hair & Beauty to develop your progression onto one of our level 1 programme, for your second year.

As you progress through the programme, we will introduce additional Enrichment activities and units based on interests, confidence and the skills you would like to develop.

What do I need?

This course is designed for learners who are not quite ready for Level 1 but are keen to take their first steps towards a future in Hair and Beauty. It provides a supportive stepping stone to help you build confidence, develop practical skills and prepare for progression. You will usually have achieved Grade 1s in Maths and English.

How will I be assessed?

This course will have theory assessments.

Where can it take me?

Successfully completing the course can help you develop the confidence and practical skills needed to progress to your next stage of learning, onto an appropriate level 1 programme.

Depending on your interests and individual progression plan, this could include progressing onto further Hair & Beauty study, vocational training or other supported learning opportunities.

The VTCT level 2 Diploma in Hair & Media make up studies qualification has been specifically designed to develop practical skills in make-up and some hairdressing elements, enabling you to perform these services as well as assist others within the industry.
