This pathway is designed for students who enjoy practical and applied science and are interested in progressing into Biomedical Science, Medical Science, Laboratory Science and other related scientific fields.
You will study the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science alongside the Pearson Level 3 AAQ in Medical Science, combining a broad understanding of Biology, Chemistry and Physics with a more specialised focus on human health, disease and medical science.
The pathway develops your laboratory, investigative, analytical and scientific skills, providing a strong vocational route for progression to university, Higher Education, apprenticeships or employment within biomedical, medical, laboratory and wider science sectors.
BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science
You will study a broad range of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, developing scientific knowledge alongside practical laboratory, investigative and analytical skills. Specialist units in Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques and Medical Physics Applications provide an additional focus on biomedical and medical applications of science.
Pearson Level 3 AAQ in Medical Science
Alongside the Diploma, you will study topics focused on human health and medical science, exploring how science is used to understand, investigate and diagnose disease. The pathway includes the specialist Biomedical Science unit, providing further insight into laboratory-based biomedical science and its role within healthcare.
Together, the two qualifications provide a strong applied and vocational science programme, with a particular emphasis on biomedical, medical and laboratory science.
You will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language, Maths and Science.
You will be assessed through a combination of external examinations, internally assessed assignments and practical laboratory work.
The BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science includes examinations alongside coursework, practical investigations and scientific assignments.
The Pearson Level 3 AAQ in Medical Science is also assessed through a mixture of external examinations and internally assessed units, including applied and biomedical science-based assignments.
On successful completion, you will achieve qualifications equivalent in size to three A Levels – the Diploma is equivalent to two A Levels, alongside your AAQ in Medical Science.
This pathway can support progression to a range of degrees including Biomedical Science, Medical Science, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Healthcare Science and other applied science-related courses, subject to individual university entry requirements.
You could also progress to HNC/HND study, higher or degree apprenticeships, or employment within laboratories, healthcare, biomedical, pharmaceutical and wider science sectors.
This is a set programme of study. By enrolling onto the Pathway to Applied & Biomedical Sciences, you are signing up to study both the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science and the Pearson Level 3 AAQ in Medical Science.
The qualifications are designed to complement each other, creating a three-A-Level-sized programme with a strong focus on applied, medical and biomedical science.
Students should be prepared for a combination of examinations, coursework and practical laboratory work and will be expected to fully engage with both qualifications throughout the two-year programme.
