Please note: Reforms are currently taking place for this course, but there will be a course available at Level 3. The content below is based off the 2025-26 offering.
Forensic Science is simply the application of Science to the law. This course aims to develop an appreciation of the competencies, skills and knowledge required for university and employment, in Science based careers.
You will develop scientific analytical thinking skills through the use of biological, chemical and physical evidence. You will develop skills to help you remain impartial, develop a chronology and provide scientific justification for analysis, and you will present facts in a non-biased manner through detailed investigations.
This is an applied science course and in the first year you will study a variety of fascinating units that look at the Principles of Science, together with learning Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques. The theoretical and practical skills needed for Scientific and Forensic Investigations, including for Forensic Photography are also covered. In the second year of the course, Applications of Criminology will be studied and you will have the opportunity to consider Criminal Investigation Procedures and the Application of Criminal and Forensic Psychology. Further units will include Forensic Genetics and Practical Chemical Analysis.
Work experience is a key part of the course – you will need to find a minimum of 5 days over the course of the academic year to allow you to gin the knowledge of working within the Science industry; this would be at a Pharmacy, GP surgery, Pet Shop, Care Home or somewhere that is related to the Science sector. Your personal coach will help you write a plan for potential placements to help you gain this key skill.
You will need to have achieved at least 5 GCSE’s at Grade 4 and above, including English, Maths and Science.
This course is assessed through a combination of examinations, externally marked assessments and coursework.
You can progress to a range of higher level courses, including a degree or HNC/D in Applied Sciences. An apprenticeship could also be considered.
This course is ideal if you wish to pursue a career in Forensic Science, Applied Science, Laboratory Work or roles in the Emergency Services such as the Police.
The duration of this course is 2 years.
