Please note: Reforms are currently taking place for this course, but there will be a course available at Level 3. The content below is based off the 2025-26 offering.

BTEC Applied Science is designed to provide a more practical, real-word approach to learning alongside a clearly explained structured theoretical background. This will help you to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to prepare you to meet the needs of employees as well as supporting your progression to university or an apprenticeship.

You will study a range of units that include:

  • Principles and Applications of Science
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Physiology and Human Body Systems
  • Human Regulation and Reproduction
  • Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways
  • Industrial Chemical Reactions
  • Medical Physics

The course is equivalent to 3 A levels and allows excellent progression to a wide range of Science degrees as well as apprenticeships.

Work experience is a key part of the course – you will need to find a minimum of 5 days over the course of the academic year to allow you to gin the knowledge of working within the Science industry; this would be at a Pharmacy, GP surgery, Pet Shop, Care Home or somewhere that is related to the Science sector. Your personal coach will help you write a plan for potential placements to help you gain this key skill.

You will need to have achieved at least 5 GCSE’s at Grade 4 and above, including English, Maths and Science.

This course is assessed through a combination of examinations, assessed assignments and practical work and coursework, including presentations and open book tests.

You can progress to a range of higher level courses, including a degree or HNC/D in Applied Sciences. An apprenticeship could also be considered.

This course is ideal if you wish to pursue a career as a Biomedical Scientist, Microbiologist, Clinical Scientists or many roles within the Science or Health sectors.

This duration of this course is 2 years.
