The BTEC Introductory Diploma in Applied Science Level 1 is an excellent course that will allow you to immerse yourself into the world of Science and also allow you to gain valuable key skills such as problem solving, communication and research as well as help you develop the necessary transferable and sector skills to progress more quickly.

Course content

Pearson BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Applied Science qualification is a 1 year course, designed to enhance learners work and life skills in science vocational contexts.

There are a range of units studied that will enable entry into BTEC Level 2 programme.

Developing a personal progression plan

Researching a topic
Carrying out a scientific experiment
Investigating variations in plants and animals
Investigating crime scene evidence
Exploring biology
Exploring chemistry
Exploring physics

Work experience is a key part of your course – you will need to find a minimum of 5 days over the course of the academic year to allow you to gain the knowledge of working within the Science industry; this could be at a Pharmacy, GP surgery, Pet Shop, Care home or somewhere else that is related to the Science sector. Your Personal Coach will help you write a plan for potential placements to help you gain this key skill.

What do I need?

No formal qualifications needed, entry will be by initial assessment. Maths and English resits will form part of the main programme.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through assignments based on personal research and the results of practical investigations.

Where can it take me?

Pearson BTEC Level 1 Diploma intends for learners to progress onto the Level 2, but it does also extend to preparation for a work-related focus. There is potential for the qualification to prepare learners for employment in a particular vocational sector and it is suitable for those who have decided that they wish to enter a specific area of work including apprenticeships and science related industries.
