Pathway to Engineering Sciences

Pathway to Engineering Sciences

Course Code: H30422

Level: 3

Study mode: Full time

Duration: 2 years

Course Code: H30422

Level: 3

Study mode: Full time

Duration: 2 years

This pathway is designed for students who are interested in progressing into Engineering, Physics and other engineering-related degrees and careers, but who prefer an academic and scientific route.

You will study the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science alongside Level 3 AAQ in Engineering, developing a strong understanding of the scientific and mathematical principles that underpin engineering.

This is not a practical or hands-on engineering course. The pathway focuses on science, mathematics, problem-solving, analysis and theoretical engineering principles, making it particularly suitable for students considering progression to university-level engineering and related STEM subjects.

The pathway can support progression to university, Higher Education, apprenticeships or employment within engineering, technology and the wider STEM sector.

BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science

You will study a broad range of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, developing scientific knowledge alongside practical, investigative and analytical skills. Specialist units in Electrical Circuits and their Applications and Medical Physics Applications provide an additional focus on physics, electrical systems and technology.

Pearson Level 3 AAQ in Engineering

Alongside the Diploma, you will study the scientific and mathematical principles that underpin engineering, as well as engineering design and problem-solving. You will explore how engineering principles are applied to real-world situations and develop skills in analysis, design, mathematics and technical problem-solving.

This is an academic engineering pathway rather than a hands-on engineering course, making it particularly suitable for students who want to progress into engineering through a science-based route.

You will need 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including English Language, Maths and Science.

As this pathway includes AAQ in Engineering you should have a strong interest in Engineering and Maths and be prepared for a combination of academic study, practical laboratory work and vocational assessment across the two qualifications.

You will be assessed through a combination of external examinations, internally assessed assignments and practical/project-based work.

The BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science includes both externally and internally assessed units, including examinations, scientific investigations and coursework assignments.

The Pearson Level 3 AAQ in Engineering is assessed through a combination of externally assessed examinations and internally assessed units, including engineering design and problem-solving activities.

On successful completion, you will achieve qualifications equivalent in size to three A Levels – the Diploma is equivalent to two A Levels, alongside your AAQ in Engineering.

This pathway can support progression to a range of Engineering, Physics, Technology and other STEM-related degrees, subject to individual university entry requirements.

You could also progress to HNC/HND study, higher or degree apprenticeships, or employment within the engineering, technology, manufacturing and wider STEM sectors.

This is a set programme of study. By enrolling onto the Pathway to Engineering Sciences, you are signing up to study both the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science and the Pearson Level 3 AAQ in Engineering.

This is a science-based, academic route into engineering, rather than a traditional hands-on engineering course. Students should be prepared for a strong focus on scientific principles, mathematics, engineering theory, design and problem-solving across the two-year programme.
