Ancient History offers an exciting opportunity to explore the civilisations, individuals and events that shaped the ancient world. Students will investigate the history of Ancient Greece and Rome while developing strong skills in analysis, evaluation and historical enquiry.
During this course, you will study a range of fascinating historical periods from the Greek and Roman worlds. You will examine major political, military, social and cultural developments, exploring topics such as the rise and fall of empires, influential leaders, warfare, power and society. Through the study of ancient evidence and historical interpretations, you will develop an understanding of how historians investigate and debate the past.
You will need GCSEs with 2 grade 6s and 3 grade 5s, including a grade 5 in English Language. Retaking GCSE Maths as part of your programme is required if you do not have Grade 4.
Ancient History at Halesowen College is a linear qualification. Students will complete mock examinations at the end of the first year and will sit external examinations at the end of the second year. Assessment focuses on students’ ability to analyse and evaluate historical sources, interpretations and evidence while constructing well-supported historical arguments.
You can progress to a wide range of higher education courses, including Ancient History, Classics, History, Archaeology, Law, Politics and Education. The course develops valuable research, analytical and communication skills that are highly regarded by universities and employers, leading to careers in teaching, heritage, museums, archaeology, law, journalism, public service and many other professions.
Ancient History combines particularly well with History, Religious Studies, Philosophy, Politics, and English Literature. This course is ideal for students who enjoy exploring past societies, debating historical interpretations and understanding how the ancient world continues to influence modern life. It provides excellent preparation for university study and a broad range of future career opportunities.
