The study of History will appeal to those who wish to discover how and why the world evolved to be as it is today. History is regarded as a keystone academic subject by competitive universities, and offers an established route into the professions.

Course content

During the course, you will study tumultuous periods of early modern and modern history. During Year 1 you will explore the origins and consequences of the brutal civil wars that ravaged and transformed both Britain and America.

In Year 2 you will study the development of the American civil rights movement, charting the heroic fight of civil rights activists, striving to gain equality for all Americans, regardless of race, gender or ethnicity.

You will also complete a coursework assignment from a selection of titles.

What do I need?

You will need GCSEs with 2 grade 6s and 3 grade 5s including English Language. Retaking GCSE Maths as part of your programme is required if you do not have grade 4.

How will I be assessed?

History is a 2 year (linear) A Level with mock exams at the end of the first year and the A Level exams at the end of year 2.

Where can it take me?

You can progress to an exciting range of higher level courses, including Teaching, or a related degree such as History, Politics, Law, English or Sociology.

Additional information

History A Level combines well with Economics, English, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, Politics, Psychology, Religious Studies and Sociology.

This course is ideal if you are interested in a career as a Historian, Archivist, Civil Servant, Teacher, Curator or Lawyer.
