This qualification is designed for learners who have completed a Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating or have suitable industry experience and wish to develop their skills further. It provides a more advanced understanding of painting and decorating techniques used in the construction industry.

The course involves both theoretical and practical learning. Learners will gain hands-on experience in preparing and finishing various surfaces, applying complex decorative finishes, and using different painting and wallpapering techniques to professional standards.

Learners will also build their knowledge of materials, equipment, health and safety, and the wider principles of construction.

The course covers:

Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
Preparing surfaces for decoration
Applying paint systems by brush and roller to complex areas
Hanging wall coverings to complex surfaces
Producing specialist decorative finishes
Understanding principles of construction, information and communication
Health, safety and welfare in construction

Course content

Learners must complete the following mandatory units:

Principles of building construction, information and communication
Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
Preparing surfaces for decoration
Applying paint systems by brush and roller to complex areas
Applying standard papers to walls and ceilings
Producing specialist decorative finishes
Health, safety and welfare in construction

Some optional units may be offered depending on workshop capacity and project design, such as:

Hanging wall coverings to complex surfaces
Applying water-borne and solvent-borne coatings using HVLP spray equipment .

What do I need?

Learners are expected to have achieved the following:

City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating (6707-13) or equivalent qualification,

A grade 3 in both Maths and English is desirable to support the theoretical and communication aspects of the course .

How will I be assessed?

Written multiple-choice tests to assess underpinning knowledge of each unit.

Practical assignments that demonstrate learners’ ability to perform tasks safely and to a professional standard, such as preparing and painting complex areas, producing decorative effects, and hanging patterned wallpaper.

Where can it take me?

The City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating (6707-23) qualification is recognised across the construction industry and demonstrates competency.

Employment as a Painter and Decorator, Decorating Operative, or Site Finisher.

Apprenticeships within the construction industry for further on-the-job training and certification .
