Religious Studies offers a stimulating and intellectually engaging study of philosophy, ethics and religion. Students will explore some of the most significant questions about belief, morality and human existence while developing valuable analytical, evaluative and communication skills.
During this course, you will study Philosophy of Religion, Religion and Ethics, and Developments in Christian Thought. You will explore topics such as arguments for the existence of God, the problem of evil, conscience, ethical theories, gender and sexuality, and modern developments within Christianity. The course encourages students to question assumptions, evaluate different viewpoints and engage in thoughtful debate on contemporary issues.
You will need GCSEs with 2 grade 6s and 3 grade 5s, including a grade 5 in English Language. Retaking GCSE Maths as part of your programme is required if you do not have Grade 4. A grade 5 in a Humanities subject at GCSE is preferable.
Religious Studies at Halesowen College is a linear qualification. Students will complete mock examinations throughout the two years of study and will sit three external examinations at the end of the second year. Assessment focuses on students’ ability to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, analysis and evaluation of religious, philosophical and ethical concepts.
You can progress to a wide range of higher education courses, including Theology, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Law, Politics, History, Education and Sociology. The course develops critical thinking, research and communication skills that are highly valued in careers such as teaching, law, social work, journalism, public service, counselling and the charity sector.
Religious Studies combines particularly well with Philosophy, History, Politics, Sociology, Psychology, English Literature and Law. This course is ideal for students who enjoy discussing ideas, evaluating evidence and exploring moral, philosophical and religious questions that remain highly relevant in today’s society. It provides excellent preparation for university study and a wide range of professional careers.
